As the premiere destination for all things fur, we’ve developed an in-depth guide for selecting, styling, and maintaining your mink fur coats, so they can continue to look stunning and feel divine for the long term.
Where to Wear Mink Fur Coats
The short answer: everywhere. Grocery store runs, commuting to the office, shoveling the driveway… Mink fur infuses even the most mundane tasks with a hint of luxury that looks as good as it feels.
Going for classic glamour? Our full-length mink coats channel old Hollywood allure, especially in sleek neutrals like ranch and mahogany. Mid-length mink toes the line between casual and couture, with statement collars, bold colors, and chic embellishments that transition from opera nights and winter weddings to movie theaters and PTA meetings.
Mink Fur
If you don’t anticipate any galas on the horizon, certain silhouettes and details, like hoods and zippers, can tone down the opulence for a more casual, wintery look (that still feels infinitely glamorous). The mink fur vest is unrivaled for its versatility, inviting sustainable warmth into your wardrobe while instantly elevating everything in your closet. We also recommend coats in shorter cuts (garments) and reversibles for a sporty look that travels well.
Ultimately, the fur goes where you go, so don’t be afraid to show off your mink coat every day of the week.
Our Designers
At ML Furs, we only carry designers who share our high standard of excellence.
Our own private label, EM-EL, is known for sleek mid-length coats, zip-up silhouettes, versatile reversibles, and hooded looks that thrive in casual settings.
How to Maintain Your Mink
Mink is one of the softest, lightest, yet warmest furs in our catalog. When cared for properly, your mink coat will maintain its sheen and luster for many seasons to come. At-home care is only recommended during the months when you wear your fur garments. We recommend a cool, dark spot to hang your fur coats freely. Another no-no: sunlight. Excessive exposure to UV rays can lead to bleaching, oxidation, or other discolorations that can occur to any natural, sustainable textile, or even human skin or hair! It’s also important to keep your garments away from damp conditions that can lead to mold, which can cause bald patches and be costly to remove. Never store in a basement, wine cellar, or cedar closet. Keep away from all areas that can attract pests. There are several pests, including mice and case-making clothes moths.
Choosing the right hanger is another vital step in your mink maintenance regimen. We recommend a padded, heavy-duty hanger that can easily handle the weight of your coat without breaking. It is also worth investing in a breathable garment bag, which allows for proper airflow to prevent the fur from becoming moldy or overly dry, although no bag is ideal.
And whatever you do, leave the cleaning to a professional furrier. Dry cleaners do not clean furs, shearlings, or leather.
When not in use, store your garments professionally with a furrier who maintains a vault temperature and humidity between 34–45°F, as available at ML Furs.
Do Fur Coats Have Different Sizing Than Regular Coats?
Nope. If you wear a size 12 in wool or leather, a size 12 fur will fit you, too. The best part of fur is that each garment can be easily tailored to your measurements, including, but not limited to, sleeve length, bust, hips, and cross-back.
Please note, however, that European and designer brands may offer different sizing options. If you want a snug fit, custom sizing, or any shopping advice at all, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team so we can assist you. And lastly, if you are shopping in our brick-and-mortar store, we can size you in person or over the phone with a few quick questions. We are custom fitters.
Ethical Sourcing
At ML Furs, we are committed to ethical sourcing for all of our mink fur coats. We only select our premium furs from ranches with animal welfare certifications or from countries with sustainable fur trades.
